China market growth and potential – seeing what's next

The potential of the China market is undiminished as ITA's recent research indicates. While many English language publishers are seeing income streams develop steadily in traditional sectors, maximising the market's potential remains a challenge. The pace of change obvious to all may be breaking down old structures but this has, in many ways, increased the market's complexity. In-market insight and expertise to guide market investment or commercial strategy has never been more important.

While the English language book market in China continues to offer opportunities for growth even in the current economic climate, our view is that there are additional exciting opportunities emerging fast for English language publishers.

Two stand out:

• The potential for mobile content provision which 3-G cellular technology offers. Uncertainty was resolved in January this year when the Ministry of Industry and Information and Technology of China confirmed licences for all three cellular technology (3-G) standards. With 600 million mobile phone users, the market is now poised for rapid exploitation.

• Digitisation, underpinned by the impetus provided by the Government's stated commitment to it both as a means of meeting the huge demand for educational texts and to meet their Chinese culture export agenda. Chinese publishers and authors (academic and trade) recognise that digitisation is the key both to internal markets and, increasingly, profitable exploitation of export markets too.
